Any member of the club wishing to use club sculling or straight (without coxswain) equipment must attain the level certification to which certain sculling/straight shells have been assigned. There are four levels of certification.
In order to move from one level to the next highest level, a certified member of that level must give approval by making sure all requirements have been met by the member seeking to move up a level. For example, a Level 1 member seeking to row equipment in the Level 2 category must be certified by a Level 2 member. Certifications and exceptions may be made by the executive board.
Level 1 - Equipment - Recreational Single (Alden Star)
Qualification - Completion of the novice/post-novice class (or equivalent as approved by the equipment manager), plus one sculling lesson, and approval by a Level 2 member. Must log 50 miles in a recreational single before moving to Level 2.
Level 2 - Equipment - Race/trainer 1X, Race/trainer 2-/X
Qualification - Level 1 certification, 50 logged miles in a recreational single (only those miles recorded in the VBC log book count), and approval by a Level 2 member.
Level 3 - Equipment - Racing 1X, Racing 2-/X
Qualification - Level 2 certification, 50 logged miles in Level 2 equipment, and approval by a Level 3 member.
Level 4 - Equipment - 4X (Quad), 4- (Straight four)
Qualification - Level 3 certification, 50 logged miles in Level 3 equipment (or 100 logged miles in Level 2 equipment), and approval by a Level 4 member. Bow seats in Level 4 boats MUST be Level 4 members. No other seat in a Level 4 boat may be filled by anyone with less that Level 2 certification.
Level Certification will be marked in the Log Book by a Board Member. Initials will be placed next to the members name (certifying approval to the next level boat). The honor system applies here. For the protection of the members and the equipment, we ask you to abide by this policy in good faith.
