Become a Coxswain

coxswain at workAre you an experienced coxswain?  Now's your chance to get involved!

Have you always wanted to give it a try? We'll teach you how!

What is a coxswain?

The role of the cox is exciting, challenging and very rewarding.  The coxswain's job is multifaceted; first, the cox relays the instructions of the coach to the rowers. The cox also steers the boat (using a cord attached to the boat's rudder), and guides the crew with his or her commands when the rowers carry the boat on land. Very much a part a part of the crew, the cox plays a vital role during a competition by encouraging the rowers and executing the team's race strategy by regulating the crew's power and speed, and by efficient and effective steering.

Coxswains who do not row enjoy dues-free membership in the VBC!
