Safety Precautions for Rowing on The James River
Please Follow Early Season VBC Rowing Policies: Blinkies for Safety!

ROWING SAFETY REMINDERS:

We have operated since 1986 without any incident or accidents. The commercial pilots on the lower James have been courteous to us and watch out for us, but we shouldn’t push our luck.

1) PLEASE use your common sense and courtesy to other boats to keep safe—cutting closely in front of moving boats is dangerous and rude.

2) PLEASE give the tugs and other boats wide berth, whether or not they are moving, since they can start suddenly and without notice. Downtown rowers, please move to mid-channel as you approach the barge loading area if there are barges present. Otherwise, maintain normal traffic patterns of rowing downstream on the south/west side of the river and upstream on the north/east (boathouse) side of the river.

3) PLEASE wear bright or light colors. A number or rowers have been wearing black t-shirts. While black is very classic and always stylish, it turns you into a stealth rower, which is BAD.

4) BOATHOUSE TO I-95 Stretch—remember that once you clear the Intermediate Terminal just upstream from our dock, the river channel shifts and disappears. Upstream from the island (just past the Intermediate Terminal docks), a sandbar starts in midstream. Once you clear the island rowing upstream, head for the South side of the river, which is opposite from our usual traffic pattern. Row up and back to the island on the south side of the river. Otherwise you may run aground on the mid-channel sandbar. That stretch of the river has silted up considerably since it was last used for rowing in 1972, but is rowable if you stick to the south side.

We hope to see you on the river!
