Interested in learning to sweep row? The group learn to sweep row program will be offered twice this year (spring & summer) - as a 90 minute class three times a week (in the evenings) for four week sessions (the schedule may change slightly due to work demands of the Sweep Rowing Coach). Students will learn proper blade technique, body position, and teamwork to enable them to enjoy the thrill of the power and speed of all eight rowing together. This will teach team sweep rowing in a four or eight person shell and prepare the student for team or group rowing. The group sweep course will culminate in the students racing as novices in an 8+ or 4+ person shell in a USRA-sanctioned regatta in Richmond, Norfolk, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, or other venues.

The VBC is a master's rowing club, primarily for rowers age 26 and over, although, we do accept members as young as 18. Youth rowing for high school age athletes is currently offered by James River High School, Trinity High School, and the North Moreland Rowing Association.

Graduates from the sweep program will be eligible to join the VBC and row as a VBC 8+ or 4+. Depending upon demand, our course teacher(s) will be available to continue to coach VBC sweep boats on a for fee basis and take the boats to races throughout the summer.

Lessons will be taught by our current VBC Sweep coach at the main (downtown) VBC boathouse. Tuition for each course is $200.00. Graduates of the course who join the VBC are entitled to a waiver of the VBC $50 initiation fee.
