Learn to Row This Summer Starting in early May 2004, the VBC will offer individualized learn to scull and group learn to row classes. Sculling classes are offered as a 5 lesson class of approximately 90 minutes per class on a 2-1 or 1-1 basis. The sculling class will enable students to master the basic skills of sculling so that they can experience the grace, elegance, and speed of rowing a single (one person) or double (two persons, 4 oars) shell. Graduates of this class are eligible to join the VBC and scull from the VBC boathouses using use club sculls, and hopefully your own scull. The group learn to row classes is offered as a 90 minute class three times a week for four weeks. Students will learn proper blade technique, body position, and teamwork to enable them to enjoy the thrill of the power and speed of all eight rowing together. This will teach team sweep rowing in an eight person shell and prepare the student for team or group rowing. The group sweep course will culminate in the students racing as novices in an 8+ or 4+ person shell in a USRA-sanctioned regatta in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, or other venues. Graduates from the sweep program will be eligible to join the VBC and row as a VBC 8+ or 4+ . Depending upon demand, our course teachers will be available to continue to coach VBC sweep boats on a for fee basis and take the boats to races throughout the summer. Lessons are taught by the
VCU Varsity Crew Captains,
Erin Moran and Ansel Gustafson from the main (downtown) VBC boathouse and from
our boathouse at Robious Landing Park in Chesterfield County. Tuition for each
course is $200.00. Graduates of the courses who join the VBC are entitled to a
waiver of the VBC $50 initiation fee. For more information on the Summer Learn
to Row Program, please contact VCUcaptains@hotmail.com
